Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 5. Opérateurs partiels normaux et théorème spectral
Let be a self-adjoint partial operator on E and a real number. Then Sp if and only if there exists an orthonormal sequence in E such that tends to 0 in E.
Suppose first that Sp. If the spectral projector of relative to is of infinite rank, any orthonormal sequence in its image answers the question (cf. cor. to prop. 9 of IV, p. 278). We shall suppose in the sequel that this is not the case.
For each , let be the set of such that
The sets are pairwise disjoint. Moreover, for every integer , the sets form a partition of the set
Since the spectral projector of relative to is of infinite rank (lemma 9 of IV, p. 297) and that relative to is supposed to be of finite rank, one deduces from prop. 8 of IV, p. 278 that there exists a strictly increasing sequence in such that the spectral projector of relative to is nonzero. Let be a vector of norm 1 in the image of . The sequence is orthonormal, since the image of is orthogonal to that of for all in .
Let . Let denote the spectral measure of relative to ; its support is contained in (prop. 9 of IV, p. 278). It follows that
therefore the sequence has the required property.
Conversely, suppose that there exists an orthonormal sequence in E such that 0. Let denote the spectral measure of relative to .
Let . Let denote the spectral projector of relative to the open interval . For every , we have
The assumption on the sequence therefore implies that the norm of cannot tend to 0. Since the orthonormal sequence converges weakly to 0 in E (Lemma 13), the projector cannot be compact (Cor. of Prop. 6 of III, p. 6) and is consequently of infinite rank. Since this holds for every , Lemma 9 of IV, p. 297 allows us to conclude that Sp.
The following theorem is the analogue for self-adjoint partial operators of Theorem 3 of III, p. 93.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
