Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 5. Opérateurs partiels normaux et théorème spectral
Let be a self-adjoint partial operator on E and a symmetric partial operator bounded relatively to . If the relative norm is , then the partial operator with domain dom() is self-adjoint.
Since , there exist by definition positive real numbers and such that and for every dom().
Let . Put . We have dom() since the image of is contained in the domain of , which is contained in the domain of by hypothesis. Let dom(). Since is self-adjoint, we have
whence the inequalities and . But then we get
In particular, put for ; we obtain
It follows that and that .
Since 1, there exists such that . Then and ; the endomorphisms and of E are therefore invertible (Prop. 2 of I, p. 22). Since we have the formula , this implies that is surjective; analogously, the partial operator is surjective. It follows that is self-adjoint (Prop. 11 of IV, p. 240).
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
