Théories spectrales, chapter IV, § 5. Opérateurs partiels normaux et théorème spectral
Let be a self-adjoint partial operator on E. Then has compact resolvent if and only if the canonical injection of the Hilbert space into E is compact.
Suppose that has compact resolvent. There exists Sp() such that is compact (prop. 19, (iii)). Let B be the unit ball of the Hilbert space . Since is a continuous linear mapping of into E, the subset of E is bounded. Since is compact, the subset is relatively compact in E (remark 1 of III, p. 2). This proves that is compact.
Conversely, suppose that the linear mapping is compact. The complex number belong to the resolvent set of (Proposition 17 of IV, p. 248). We have . Let B be the unit ball of E. For every , we have
and consequently
The image C of B under is therefore bounded in ; since is compact by hypothesis, the set is relatively compact in E (III, loc. cit.). Consequently, the resolvent is compact and has compact resolvent (Proposition 19, (iii)).
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
