Spectral Theories, IV, p. 358
Let be a partial operator on a Hilbert space E. Let dom() denote the space of vectors such that dom() for every integer , and such that the power series
(23) !
has radius of convergence . The elements of dom() are called the analytic vectors of .
Let be an element of E such that belongs to dom() for every . Let be the closure of the subspace of E generated by the vectors for , and let be the partial operator on with domain deduced from by passing to subspaces. One says that is a uniqueness vector of if is essentially self-adjoint.
a) Suppose that is symmetric and that E contains a total subset of uniqueness vectors for . Then is essentially self-adjoint. (Show that the image of and that of are dense in E.)
Suppose henceforth that is symmetric and that E contains a total subset of analytic vectors.
b) For every analytic vector of , the partial operator on admits a self-adjoint extension.
c) Let be an analytic vector for and let be the radius of convergence of the power series (23). Let be a self-adjoint extension of . For every such that , one has
!.
(Using the spectral measure of relative to , prove that the left-hand side is the restriction of an analytic function on the set of such that , and calculate the power series expansion of this function at 0.)
d) For every , the unitary operator depends only on and the operator is essentially self-adjoint. (Use Theorem V, p. 428.) e) Deduce that is essentially self-adjoint.
f) A symmetric and closed partial operator on E is self-adjoint if and only if dom() is dense in E.
