Spectral Theories, IV, p. 372

Let E be a complex Hilbert space.

a) Let uu be a self-adjoint partial operator on E. For every λ∈R\lambda \in \mathbf{R}, one has λ∈\lambda \in Spe(u)_e(u) if and only if there exists a sequence (xn)(x_n) in E which converges weakly to 0 in E and satisfies the conditions

lim infn→+∞∥xn∥>0_{n\rightarrow+\infty}\|x_n\|>0, limn→+∞(u(xn)−λxn)=0_{n\rightarrow+\infty}(u(x_n)-\lambda x_n) = 0.

b) Let uu and vv be self-adjoint partial operators on E. If there exists λ∈C−\lambda \in \mathbf{C}- (Sp(uu)∪\cup Sp(vv)) such that R(u,λ)−R(v,λ)R(u, \lambda )-R(v, \lambda ) is compact, then Spe(u)=_e(u) = Spe(v)_e(v).

c) Let uu be a closed symmetric partial operator on E. Let u1u_1 and u2u_2 be self-adjoint extensions of uu. If the space Ker(u∗−iu^*-i) is finite-dimensional, then Spe(u1)=_e(u_1) = Spe(u2)_e(u_2).

d) Let uu be a self-adjoint partial operator on E and vv a partial operator compact with respect to uu (see the preceding exercise). The partial operator u+vu+v is self-adjoint and Spe(u+v)=_e(u+v) = Spe(u)_e(u).
