Théories spectrales, chapter V, § 1. Représentations unitaires

Let ϱ\varrho be a unitary representation of a topological group G in a nonzero Hilbert space E. Then ϱ\varrho is irreducible if and only if HomG(ϱ,ϱ)_G(\varrho , \varrho ) is equal to C⋅1E\mathbf{C}\cdot 1_E.

The space HomG(ϱ,ϱ)_G(\varrho , \varrho ) is a unital stellar subalgebra of L(E)\mathscr{L}(E) (lemma 5 of V, p. 380). For every subrepresentation F of E, the orthogonal projector pp with image F is an idempotent element of the stellar algebra HomG(ϱ,ϱ)_G(\varrho , \varrho ) (prop. 4 of V, p. 383). If the latter is equal to C⋅1E\mathbf{C}\cdot 1_E, this means that p=0p= 0 or p=1Ep= 1_E, which means that F = 0 or F = E. Hence ϱ\varrho is irreducible.

Conversely, suppose ϱ\varrho irreducible. Let uu and vv be permutable elements of the stellar algebra HomG(ϱ,ϱ)_G(\varrho , \varrho ) such that uv=0uv= 0. Suppose uu nonzero. Then the kernel F of uu defines a subrepresentation of ϱ\varrho different from E, hence F is reduced to 0; since F contains the image of vv, it follows that v=0v= 0. By proposition 10 of I, p. 113, we therefore have HomG(ϱ,ϱ)=C⋅1E_G(\varrho , \varrho ) =\mathbf{C}\cdot 1_E.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
