Théories spectrales, chapter V, § 1. Représentations unitaires

Let ϱ\varrho and π\pi be irreducible unitary representations of a topological group G in Hilbert spaces E and F respectively. The space HomG(ϱ,π)_G(\varrho , \pi ) is of dimension 1 if ϱ\varrho is isomorphic to π\pi, and is zero otherwise. In particular, if ϱ\varrho is isomorphic to π\pi, every nonzero G-morphism of ϱ\varrho into π\pi is an isomorphism.

Suppose there exists a nonzero G-morphism uu of ϱ\varrho into π\pi. The linear mapping u∗∘uu^*\circ u is an element of HomG(ϱ,ϱ)_G(\varrho , \varrho ), hence there exists a complex number λ\lambda such that u∗∘u=λ⋅1Eu^*\circ u=\lambda \cdot 1_E (Prop. 6). We then have

⟨u(x)∣u(y)⟩=⟨x∣u∗u(y)⟩=λ⟨x∣y⟩ \langle u(x)|u(y)\rangle =\langle x|u^*u(y)\rangle =\lambda \langle x|y\rangle

for all xx and yy in E. In particular, λ≠0\lambda \not = 0 since uu is nonzero. Since ∥u(x)∥=∣λ∣1/2∥x∥\|u(x)\|=|\lambda |^{1/2}\|x\| for all x∈Ex\in E, the linear mapping uu is injective, and the image of uu is closed in F (Lemma 8 of I, p. 107); it is therefore a nonzero subrepresentation of the irreducible representation π\pi, whence one deduces that uu is surjective. Thus, uu is an isomorphism of ϱ\varrho onto π\pi. The mapping v↦u∗∘vv\mapsto u^*\circ v is then an isomorphism of the space HomG(ϱ,π)_G(\varrho , \pi ) onto the space HomG(ϱ,ϱ)_G(\varrho , \varrho ), which is of dimension 1 (Prop. 6).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
