Théories spectrales, chapter V, § 1. Représentations unitaires

Let π\pi be an irreducible unitary representation of a topological group G in a Hilbert space E. There exists a continuous homomorphism χ\chi of the center C of G into U\mathbf{U} such that π(z)=χ(z)⋅1E\pi (z) =\chi (z)\cdot 1_E for all z∈Cz\in C. In particular, if G is commutative, one has dim(E) = 1.

For z∈Cz\in C, the mapping π(z)\pi (z) belong to HomG(π,π)_G(\pi , \pi ); it is therefore of the form χ(z)⋅1E\chi (z)\cdot 1_E for a certain complex number χ(z)\chi (z) (prop. 6). Since π(z)\pi (z) is a unitary mapping, one has ∣χ(z)∣=1|\chi (z)|= 1. Moreover, since π\pi is a homomorphism, the mapping z↦χ(z)z\mapsto \chi (z) is a homomorphism. Let us fix v≠0v\not = 0 in E; the mapping z↦χ(z)v=π(z)vz\mapsto \chi (z)v=\pi (z)v of C into U\mathbf{U} is continuous, and therefore the homomorphism χ\chi is continuous.

Finally, if G is commutative, one has C = G, hence π(g)=χ(g)⋅1E\pi (g) =\chi (g)\cdot 1_E for all gg in G; every subspace of dimension 1 of E is then a subrepresentation of π\pi, and since π\pi is irreducible, the space E must be of dimension 1.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
