Théories spectrales, chapter V, § 1. Représentations unitaires
Let G be a topological group. Let be a unitary representation of G in a complex Hilbert space E.
a) Let and be non-isomorphic irreducible unitary representations of G. The subspaces and are orthogonal;
b) Let be a unitary representation of G and a G-morphism of into . For every irreducible unitary representation of G, one has .
Let and be subspaces of E defining subrepresentations isomorphic to and respectively. The orthogonal projector of E with image defines, by passing to the subspaces, an element of Hom, which is zero (Cor. 2 of V, p. 387), and this proves that is orthogonal to . This implies assertion a).
As for assertion b), note that is, by definition, the closure in E of the space generated by the elements belonging to a closed subspace stable under such that the subrepresentation of in F is isomorphic to . It is therefore enough to prove that, in this case, one has . Let ; it is a closed subspace of the space of (Cor. 5 of V, p. 388) stable under , and induces, by passing to the subspaces, a surjective G-morphism of F onto H. If H is non-zero, then this G-morphism is an isomorphism by Corollary 2 of V, p. 387. The representation of G on H is therefore isomorphic to , whence it follows that belongs to .
For every vector space H and every family of subspaces of H, one says that the spaces are in direct sum if the family satisfies the equivalent conditions of Prop. 11 of A, II, p. 18.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
