Théories spectrales, chapter V, § 1. Représentations unitaires

Let G be a topological group. Let ϱ\varrho be a unitary representation of G in a complex Hilbert space E and π\pi an irreducible unitary representation of G in a complex Hilbert space.

The multiplicity of π\pi in ϱ\varrho is defined to be the cardinal of the set I for any family (Ei)i∈I(E_i)_{i\in I} of closed subspaces of E stable under G such that the subrepresentation of ϱ\varrho induced in EiE_i is isomorphic to π\pi for every I and such that Mπ(ϱ)M_{\pi}(\varrho ) is the Hilbert sum of the subspaces EiE_i.

If the multiplicity of π\pi in ϱ\varrho is finite, then it is equal to the dimension of the space HomG(π,ϱ)_G(\pi , \varrho ) (resp. to the dimension of HomG(ϱ,π)_G(\varrho , \pi )) by formula (1) of V, p. 377 and corollary 2 of V, p. 387. This is not always the case in general.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
