Théories spectrales, chapter V, § 2. Représentations des groupes localement compacts

Let ϱ\varrho be a unitary representation of G in a Hilbert space E. The mapping ν↦ϱ(ν)\nu \mapsto \varrho (\nu ) from M1(G)\mathscr{M}^1(G) into L(E)\mathscr{L}(E) is a unital morphism of involutive Banach algebras.

From what precedes, it suffices to prove that the morphism ν↦ϱ(ν)\nu \mapsto \varrho (\nu ) is involutive. Let ν∈M1(G)\nu \in \mathscr{M}^1(G). The measure ν∗\nu^* is the conjugate measure of the measure νˇ(\check{\nu}(I, p. 99, example 4). According to the definition of the conjugate measure (INT, III, p. 52, § 1, no5^o5), one calculates

⟨x∣ϱ(ν)y⟩=∫⟨x∣ϱ(g)y⟩dν(g) \langle x|\varrho (\nu )y\rangle =\int\langle x|\varrho (g)y\rangle d\nu (g)
=∫GG⟨ϱ(g−1)x∣y⟩dν(g)=∫G⟨ϱ(g)x∣y⟩dνˇ(g) =\int^G_G\langle \varrho (g^{-1})x|y\rangle d\nu (g) =\int_G\langle \varrho (g)x|y\rangle d\check{\nu}(g)
=∫G⟨y∣ϱ(g)x⟩dν∗(g)=⟨ϱ(ν∗)x∣y⟩ =\int_G\langle y|\varrho (g)x\rangle d\nu^*(g) =\langle \varrho (\nu^*)x|y\rangle

for all xx and yy in E, whence ϱ(ν)∗=ϱ(ν∗)\varrho (\nu )^*=\varrho (\nu^*).

Let ϱ\varrho be a continuous linear representation (resp. continuous and bounded) of G in a quasi-complete locally convex space E (resp. a Banach space E). If F is a closed subspace of E defining a subrepresentation ϱF\varrho_F of ϱ\varrho, then for every measure ν∈Mc(G)\nu \in \mathscr{M}_c(G) (resp. ν∈M1(G)\nu \in \mathscr{M}^1(G)) the linear mapping ϱ(ν)\varrho (\nu ) leaves the subspace F stable and coincides with ϱF(ν)\varrho_F(\nu ) on F.

Conversely, let F⊂EF\subset E be a closed subspace, stable under the linear mappings ϱ(f)\varrho (f) for every function f∈K(G)f\in \mathscr{K}(G). Then F defines a subrepresentation of ϱ\varrho (INT, VIII, p. 139, § 2, no7^o7, prop. 10).

Recall (A, VIII, p. 388) that a function f:G→Cf: G\rightarrow \mathbf{C} is said to be central if, for all gg and hh in G, one has f(gh)=f(hg)f(gh) =f(hg). This amounts to saying that ff is invariant under conjugation.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
