Théories spectrales, chapter V, § 2. Représentations des groupes localement compacts

The biregular representation of G in Lp(G,μ)L^p(G, \mu) is not necessarily faithful; its kernel is the image of the center of G under the mapping g↦(g,g)g\mapsto (g, g) (exercise 4 of V, p. 487).

When p=2p= 2, the left regular representation γG(2)\boldsymbol{\gamma }^{(2)}_G of G in the complex Hilbert space L2(G,μ)L^2(G, \mu) is unitary, since it is isometric. Analogously, the right regular representation δG(2)\boldsymbol{\delta }^{(2)}_G in L2(G,μ′)L^2(G, \mu') is unitary.

We shall write simply γG=γG(2)\boldsymbol{\gamma }_G=\boldsymbol{\gamma }^{(2)}_G and δG=δG(2)\boldsymbol{\delta }_G=\boldsymbol{\delta }^{(2)}_G, and we shall call these representations the left and right regular representations of G.

If G is unimodular, the biregular representation ϱG(2)\boldsymbol{\varrho }^{(2)}_G of G×GG\times G in L2(G,μ)L^2(G, \mu) is unitary. We shall write it simply ϱG\boldsymbol{\varrho }_G.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
