Théories spectrales, chapter V, § 2. Représentations des groupes localement compacts

Let π\pi be an irreducible unitary representation of G in a Hilbert space E. One says that π\pi is square-integrable modulo the center if the function on G/CG/C deduced from the function ∣fx,y∣|f_{x,y}| by passing to the quotient belong to L2(G/C)\mathscr{L}^2(G/C) for every (x,y)∈E×E(x, y)\in E\times E.

This condition does not depend on the choice of a Haar measure on G/CG/C.

If the matrix coefficients of π\pi belong to L2\mathscr{L}^2(G), one says that π\pi is square-integrable; the existence of an irreducible unitary square-integrable representation of G implies that the center of G is compact (exercise 5 of V, p. 487).

There exist groups G which admit no square-integrable representation, even modulo the center (cf. exercise 32 of V, p. 516).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
