Théories spectrales, chapter V, § 2. Représentations des groupes localement compacts
Let be an irreducible unitary representation of G in a Hilbert space E. Let be the central character of . Then is square-integrable modulo the center if and only if there exist non-zero elements and of E such that the function on deduced from by passing to the quotient belongs to .
Suppose that there exist non-zero elements and of E such that . It is enough to prove that is then square-integrable modulo the center.
Let F be the set of elements such that belongs to . It is a vector subspace of E; it contains , hence is non-zero. Relation (10) above implies that F is stable under ; since the representation is irreducible, the space F is therefore dense in E.
Let . Since belongs to and is -measurable, and since , one has (Prop. 5 of V, p. 413 applied to Z = C). Let denote the partial operator from E into whose domain is F and which associates to the class of in .
Let us prove that the partial operator is closed. Let be a sequence of elements of the graph of which converges in . Let be the limit of and let be a function whose class is the limit of the sequence .
The function is the class of the matrix coefficient . For every , one has
when . Hence and almost everywhere modulo C (cor. of Prop. 3 of V, p. 409); this means that is the class of in . Thus we have proved that is closed.
The domain F of is stable under , and relation (10) proves that satisfies for all . Consequently one also has the equality for all (lemma 6 of V, p. 381), whence . Now the partial operator is self-adjoint (prop. 12 of IV, p. 241), and in particular closed (prop. 7 of IV, p. 236), hence cor. 1 of V, p. 387 implies that the domain of is equal to E. A fortiori, one has F = E, that is to say that the function belongs to for all .
Let . One has . One proves mutatis mutandis, using the representation instead of , that the set of such that the function belongs to is equal to E. The proposition follows.
In the remainder of this No., we fix a closed subgroup Z of C such that is compact.
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
