Théories spectrales, chapter V, § 2. Représentations des groupes localement compacts

Let Z be a closed subgroup of C such that C/ZC/Z is compact. Let π\pi be an irreducible unitary representation of G which is square-integrable modulo the center. The unique real number c>0c >0 which satisfies the property of Proposition 7 is called the formal degree of π\pi relative to Z. It is denoted by cZ(π)c_Z(\pi ).

The formal degree depends on the choice of the Haar measure on Z. If the Haar measure βZ\beta_Z on Z is multiplied by a real number t>0t >0, then the measure νZ=μ/βZ\nu_Z=\mu/\beta_Z on G/ZG/Z is multiplied by t−1t^{-1}, and the formal degree of π\pi is multiplied by tt.

The formal degree is characterized by the following property:

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
