Let $\pi$ be a unitary representation of G on a complex Hilbert space E. The representation $\pi$ is irreducible if and only if the image of $\mathscr{K}(G)$ in $\mathscr{L}(E)$ is dense for the topology of simple convergence. (Use Exercise 24 of IV, p. 326.)
