Spectral Theories, V, p. 498

Let GG be a locally compact group. We say that GG has Kazhdan's property ]T[[^1] if a unitary representation π\pi of GG has a non-zero trivial subrepresentation[^2] if and only if the trivial representation 1G_G of GG on C\mathbf{C} is weakly contained in π\pi.

a) Let GG be a locally compact group having property ]T[. Let H\mathscr{H} be the set of open subgroups of GG which are generated by a compact subset of GG. The group GG is the union of the subgroups H∈HH\in \mathscr{H}.

b) Let π\pi be the representation of GG which is the Hilbert sum of the quasi-regular representations of GG on G/HG/H for H∈HH\in \mathscr{H} (cf. exercise 2 of V, p. 486). We have 1G⩽π_G\leqslant \pi.

c) The group GG is generated by a compact subset of GG. In particular, if GG is discrete, then GG is generated by a finite subset of GG.
