Théories spectrales, chapter V, § 4. Représentations des groupes compacts

Suppose that G=G1×G2G = G_1\times G_2 where G1G_1 and G2G_2 are compact groups. The mapping bb from G^1×G^2\widehat{G}_1\times \widehat{G}_2 into G^\widehat{G} which to (π1,π2)(\pi_1, \pi_2) associates the class of π1⊠π2\pi_1\boxtimes \pi_2 is a bijection.

By cor. 6 of V, p. 389, the mapping bb is well defined.

Let π1\pi_1 and π2\pi_2 be elements of G^\widehat{G}. Let π∈G^\pi \in \widehat{G}. The π\pi-isotypical component of the restriction ϖ\varpi of π1⊠π2\pi_1\boxtimes \pi_2 to G1×{e}G_1\times \{e\} is equal to ϖ\varpi if π1=π\pi_1=\pi and is zero in the contrary case (lemma 8 of V, p. 384). Thus, the unitary representation π1⊠π2\pi_1\boxtimes \pi_2 determines π1\pi_1 up to isomorphism; analogously, it determines π2\pi_2, which proves that bb is injective.

Let us prove that bb is surjective. Let π\pi be an irreducible unitary representation of G1×G2G_1\times G_2 in a Hilbert space E. It is finite-dimensional (prop. 2). Let π1\pi_1 be an irreducible unitary representation of G1G_1 in a Hilbert space E1E_1 such that the restriction of π\pi to G1×{e}G_1\times \{e\} contains a subrepresentation isomorphic to π1\pi_1 (lemma 3 of V, p. 379). Let F = HomG1(π1,π)_{G_1}(\pi_1, \pi ). It is a nonzero finite-dimensional vector space. For h∈G2h\in G_2 and u∈Fu\in F, let ϱ(h)(u)\varrho (h)(u) be the linear mapping from E1E_1 into E defined by x↦π(e,h)(u(x))x\mapsto \pi (e, h)(u(x)). Since G1×{e}G_1\times \{e\} and {e}×G2\{e\} \times G_2 commute in G, the mapping ϱ(h)(u)\varrho (h)(u) belongs to the space F. The mapping ϱ\varrho is a linear representation of G2G_2 in the space F; it is continuous. Since F is not reduced to 0, there exists an irreducible subrepresentation π2\pi_2 of ϱ\varrho (lemma 3 of V, p. 379). Let E2E_2 be the space of π2\pi_2. The linear mapping v:E1⊗E2→Ev: E_1\otimes E_2\rightarrow E such that x⊗u↦u(x)x\otimes u\mapsto u(x) for x∈E1x\in E_1 and u∈E2u\in E_2 is then a nonzero G-morphism of π1⊠π2\pi_1\boxtimes \pi_2 into π\pi; since the representations π\pi and π1⊠π2\pi_1\boxtimes \pi_2 are irreducible and finite-dimensional, the morphism vv is an isomorphism (lemma 2 of V, p. 378).

This proposition is to be compared with theorem 1 of A, VIII, p. 208.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
