Théories spectrales, chapter V, § 4. Représentations des groupes compacts

The Fourier cotransformation of G induces by passing to the subspaces an isometric isomorphism of L2(G)L^2(G) onto F2(G^)F^2(\widehat{G}). Its inverse FG\mathscr{F}_G associates with an element (uπ)π∈G^(u_{\pi})_{\pi\in\widehat{G}} of F2(G^)F^2(\widehat{G}) the sum of the series

∑π∈G^Fπ(uπ) \sum_{\pi\in\widehat{G}}\mathscr{F}_{\pi}(u_{\pi})

which converges in L2(G)L^2(G).

By the Peter-Weyl theorem (th. 1 of V, p. 462), the Hilbert space L2(G)L^2(G) is the Hilbert sum of the spaces ϱG(π‾)\boldsymbol{\varrho }_G(\overline{\pi}) for π∈G^\pi \in \widehat{G}. For every π∈G^\pi \in \widehat{G}, the linear mapping f↦π(f)f\mapsto \pi (f) of ϱG(π‾)\boldsymbol{\varrho }_G(\overline{\pi}) into End(Eπ_{\pi}) is an isometric isomorphism (lemma 4). Consequently, the restriction to L2(G)L^2(G) of the Fourier cotransformation defines an isometric isomorphism of L2(G)L^2(G) onto F2(G^)F^2(\widehat{G}).

Let f∈L2(G)f\in L^2(G). Let π∈G^\pi \in \widehat{G}, and let fπ‾∈C(G)f_{\overline{\pi}}\in \mathscr{C}(G) be the orthogonal projection of ff onto ϱG(π‾)\boldsymbol{\varrho }_G(\overline{\pi}) (th. 1 of V, p. 462). Since this space is the π‾\overline{\pi}-isotypical component of δG\boldsymbol{\delta }_G (cor. 4 of V, p. 463), one has fπ‾=f_{\overline{\pi}}= dim(π\pi )δG(χπ)(f)\boldsymbol{\delta }_G(\chi_{\pi})(f) by cor. 2 of V, p. 465. For every x∈Gx\in G, this gives

fπ‾(x)=f_{\overline{\pi}}(x) = dim(π\pi )∫Gχπ(g)(δG(g)f)(x)dμ(g)\int_G\chi_{\pi}(g)(\boldsymbol{\delta }_G(g)f)(x)d\mu(g)

= dim(π\pi )∫Gχπ(g)f(xg)dμ(g)\int_G\chi_{\pi}(g)f(xg)d\mu(g)

= dim(π\pi )∫Gχπ(x−1y)f(y)dμ(y)\int_G\chi_{\pi}(x^{-1}y)f(y)d\mu(y)

= dim(π\pi)Tr(π(x−1)π(f)\pi (x^{-1})\pi (f)) =⟨π(x)∣π(f)⟩=\langle \pi (x)|\pi (f)\rangle,

that is to say fπ‾=Fπ(π(f))f_{\overline{\pi}}=\mathscr{F}_{\pi}(\pi (f)).

Since ff is the sum in L2(G)L^2(G) of the family (fπ‾)(f_{\overline{\pi}}) by the Peter–Weyl theorem, we obtain

f=∑π∈G^Fπ(π(f)) f=\sum_{\pi\in\widehat{G}}\mathscr{F}_{\pi}(\pi (f))

where the series converges in L2(G)L^2(G). This proves the theorem.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
