Spectral Theories, V, p. 515
Let n∈N. Let G denote the subgroup of the affine group A(Rn) of the space Rn formed by the elements g∈A(Rn) such that the linear mapping g0 associated with g belongs to SO(Rn); it is a real Lie group (cf. A, II, p. 131 and LIE, III, p. 102, example). We write g=(g0,a) for the elements of G, with g0∈SO(Rn) and a∈Rn.
a) The pair (G,SO(Rn)) is a Gelfand pair.
b) Let φ∈H(G,SO(Rn)). Let f:Rn→C denote the function defined by f(r)=φ(1RN,g(e1)). The mapping u:φ↦f is an injective morphism of complex algebras of H(G,K) into K(Rn); its image is the subspace of K(Rn) formed by the functions f such that f(g0(x))=f(x) for every g0∈SO(Rn) and every x∈Rn.
c) Let Δ denote the Laplacian on Rn. A function φ∈K(G) is a spherical function if and only if the function f=u(φ) is of class C∞, satisfies f(0)=1, and if there exists λ∈C such that Δf=λf. (Use the fact that Δ(f∘g0)=(Δf)∘g0 for every g0∈SO(Rn).)
