Theory of Sets, chapter III, § 3. Equipotent sets. Cardinals

For every family (aι)ι∈I(\mathfrak{a}_\iota)_{\iota \in I} of cardinals, there exists a unique cardinal b\mathfrak{b} such that aι⩽b\mathfrak{a}_\iota \leqslant \mathfrak{b} for all ι∈I\iota \in I and such that every cardinal c\mathfrak{c} for which aι⩽c\mathfrak{a}_\iota \leqslant \mathfrak{c} for all ι∈I\iota \in I is ⩾b\geqslant \mathfrak{b}.

There exists a set E containing all the sets aι\mathfrak{a}_\iota (e.g., the sum of these sets (Chapter II, § 4, no. 8)), whence aι⩽a=\mathfrak{a}_\iota \leqslant \mathfrak{a} = Card (E) for all ι∈I\iota \in I. The set F of cardinals ⩽a\leqslant \mathfrak{a} is well-ordered and contains all the aι\mathfrak{a}_\iota, and therefore the family (aι)ι∈I(\mathfrak{a}_\iota)_{\iota \in I} has a least upper bound b\mathfrak{b} in F. Let c\mathfrak{c} be a cardinal ⩾aι\geqslant \mathfrak{a}_\iota for all ι∈I\iota \in I; if c<b⩽a\mathfrak{c} < \mathfrak{b} \leqslant \mathfrak{a}, then c∈F\mathfrak{c} \in F, and the inequality aι⩽c\mathfrak{a}_\iota \leqslant \mathfrak{c} contradicts the definition of the least upper bound of the family (aι)(\mathfrak{a}_\iota) in the ordered set F; hence the result.

¶ By abuse of language, the cardinal b\mathfrak{b} is called the least upper bound of the family (aι)ι∈I(\mathfrak{a}_\iota)_{\iota \in I} and is denoted by sup⁡ι∈Iaι\sup_{\iota \in I} \mathfrak{a}_\iota.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
