Theory of Sets, III, 237

Let pnp_n be the number of permutations uu of a set E with nn elements such that u(x)≠xu(x) \neq x for all x∈Ex \in \mathrm{E}. Show that

pn=n!−(n1)(n−1)!+(n2)(n−2)!−⋯+(−1)np_n = n! - \binom{n}{1}(n-1)! + \binom{n}{2}(n-2)! - \cdots + (-1)^n

\* and hence that pn∼n!/ep_n \sim n!/e as n→+∞n \to +\infty \* (same method as in Exercise 7 (a)).
