Theory of Sets, III, 238
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
Let E be a set with elements, let be an integer , and let be the set of all subsets of with the following property : if X and Y are two distinct elements of such that , then has at most elements.
(a) Let be an element of such that is as large as possible. Show that for . (Argue by contradiction. Suppose, for example, that there exist indices such that , and consider those of the for which has the least possible value (where ). Let , , , say, be these sets. Let be the set of subsets of E each of which is the union of some and a subset of elements contained in . Show that contains at least elements (cf. Exercise 12), and that if , , are distinct elements of , the set whose elements are and belongs to , contrary to hypothesis.)
(b) Deduce from (a) that the number of elements of each satisfies the inequality
(c) Establish results analogous to those of (a) and (b) when or is replaced by an uneven number.
