Theory of Sets, III, 240

Let E be a finite set with nn elements, let D\mathfrak{D} be a non-empty subset of P(E)\mathfrak{P}(E), and let λ\lambda, kk, ll be three integers ⩾1\geqslant 1 with the following properties : (i) if A, B are distinct elements of D\mathfrak{D}, then Card (A∩B)=λ(A \cap B) = \lambda; (ii) for each A∈DA \in \mathfrak{D}, Card (A)⩽k(A) \leqslant k; (iii) for each x∈Ex \in E the number of elements of D\mathfrak{D} to which xx belongs is equal to ll. Show that

n(λ−1)⩽k(k−1),n(\lambda - 1) \leqslant k(k - 1),

and that if n(λ−1)=k(k−1)n(\lambda - 1) = k(k - 1) then λ=k\lambda = k and Card (D)=n(\mathfrak{D}) = n. (Given a∈Ea \in E, let L\mathfrak{L} be the set of all A−{a}A - \{a\} where A∈DA \in \mathfrak{D} and a∈Aa \in A, and let E\mathfrak{E} be the set of all A∈DA \in \mathfrak{D} such that a∉Aa \notin A. Apply the results of Exercise 15 to L\mathfrak{L} and E\mathfrak{E}.)
