Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let i,h,ki, h, k be three integers such that i⩾1i \geqslant 1, h⩾ih \geqslant i, k⩾ik \geqslant i. Show that there exists an integer mi(h, k)m_i(h,\ k) with the following properties : for each finite set E with at least mi(h, k)m_i(h,\ k) elements, and each partition (X, Y)(\mathfrak{X},\ \mathfrak{Y}) of the set Fi(E)\mathfrak{F}_i(E) of subsets of ii elements of E, it is impossible that every subset of hh elements of E contains a subset X∈XX \in \mathfrak{X} and that every subset of kk elements of E contains a subset Y∈YY \in \mathfrak{Y}; in other words, if every subset of hh elements of E contains some X∈XX \in \mathfrak{X}, there exists a subset A of kk elements of E such that every subset of ii elements of A belongs to X\mathfrak{X}. (Proof by induction. Show that we may take

m1(h, k)=h+k−1,mi(i, k)=k,andmi(h, i)=h,m_1(h,\ k) = h + k - 1, \qquad m_i(i,\ k) = k, \qquad \text{and} \qquad m_i(h,\ i) = h,

and finally mi(h,k)=mi−1(mi(h−1,k),mi(h,k−1))+1m_i(h, k) = m_{i-1}(m_i(h - 1, k), m_i(h, k - 1)) + 1. If E is a set with mi(h, k)m_i(h,\ k) elements, if a∈Ea \in E and if E′=E−{a}E' = E - \{a\}, show that if the proposition were false, then every subset of mi(h−1, k)m_i(h - 1,\ k) elements of E′ would contain a subset X′ of i−1i - 1 elements such that X′∪{a}∈XX' \cup \{a\} \in \mathfrak{X}, and that every subset of mi(h, k−1)m_i(h,\ k - 1) elements of E′ would contain a subset Y′ of i−1i - 1 elements such that Y′∪{a}∈YY' \cup \{a\} \in \mathfrak{Y}.)
