Theory of Sets, III, 248
Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.
(a) Let be a covering of an infinite set E. The degree of disjointness of is the least cardinal such that is strictly greater than the cardinals Card for each pair of distinct sets X, . If Card and Card , show that (note that a subset of E of cardinal is contained in at most one set of ).
(b) Let be an initial ordinal and let F be a set such that Card . Let E be the set of mappings of segments of , other than itself, into F. Then we have Card . For each mapping of into F, let be the subset of E consisting of the restrictions of to the segments of (other than itself). Show that the set of subsets is a covering of E such that Card , and that its degree of disjointness is equal to .
(c) Let E be an infinite set of cardinal , and let , be two cardinals such that , for all , and . Deduce from (b) that there exists a covering of E consisting of sets of cardinal , with degree of disjunction equal to , and such that Card . In particular, if E is countably infinite, there exists a covering of E by infinite sets such that Card and such that the intersection of any two sets of is finite.
