Theory of Sets, III, 253

Let I be a directed set and let (Eα,fβα)(E_\alpha, f_{\beta\alpha}) be a direct system of sets relative to I. For each α∈I\alpha \in I, let fα:Eα→E=lim→⁡Eαf_\alpha : E_\alpha \to E = \varinjlim E_\alpha be the canonical mapping. In each EαE_\alpha, let RαR_\alpha be the equivalence relation fα(x)=fα(y)f_\alpha(x) = f_\alpha(y).

Show that, whenever α⩽β\alpha \leqslant \beta, the mapping fβαf_{\beta\alpha} is compatible with the equivalence relations Rα\mathrm{R}_\alpha and Rβ\mathrm{R}_\beta. Let Eα′=Eα/Rα\mathrm{E}'_\alpha = \mathrm{E}_\alpha/\mathrm{R}_\alpha, and let fβα′f'_{\beta\alpha} be the mapping of Eα′\mathrm{E}'_\alpha into Eβ′\mathrm{E}'_\beta induced by fβαf_{\beta\alpha} on passing to the quotients. Show that fβα′f'_{\beta\alpha} is injective and that (Eα′,fβα′)(\mathrm{E}'_\alpha, f'_{\beta\alpha}) is a direct system of sets, and define a canonical bijection of E onto lim→⁡Eα′\varinjlim \mathrm{E}'_\alpha.
