Theory of Sets, chapter III, § 6. Infinite sets

— Let E be a Noetherian set, and let F be a subset of E with the following property : if a∈Ea \in E is such that the relation x>ax > a implies x∈Fx \in F, then a∈Fa \in F. Under these conditions, F == E.

Indeed, suppose E ≠\neq F; then E −- F has a maximal element bb. By definition we have x∈Fx \in F for all x>bx > b; but this implies b∈Fb \in F, which is absurd.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
