Let R, S be two rings, ρ:R→S a homomorphism and F a left R-module. The following two properties are equivalent: (a) Tor1R(ρ∗(E),F)=0 for every right S-module E. (b) The left S-module φ∗(F)=F(S)=S⊗RF is flat and Tor1R(ρ∗(Sd),F)=0.
Suppose that (a) holds. Taking E=Sd, we see that Tor1R(ρ∗(Sd),F)=0. We show also that F(S) is a flat S-module. For that, we note that, if E is a right S-module, the additive group E⊗SF,, is identified with ρ∗(E)⊗RF. Then if there is an exact sequence of right S-modules
0→E′→E→E′′→0
we obtain, using (a), an exact sequence
0→ρ∗(E′)⊗RF→ρ∗(E)⊗RF→ρ∗(E′′)⊗RF→0
or also
0→E′⊗SF(S)→E⊗SF(S)→E′′⊗SF(S)→0
which proves that F(S) is flat.
Conversely, if (b) holds, we have first of all, for every free right S-module L=Sd(I), Tor1R(ρ∗(L),F)=(Tor1R(ρ∗(Sd),F))(I)=0. Every right S-module E can be written in the form E=L/H for a suitable free S-module L; then we have the exact sequence
(2) 0=Tor1R(ρ∗(L),F)→Tor1R(ρ∗(E),F)→ρ∗(H)⊗RF→ρ∗(L)⊗RF.
But as F,, is flat, the homomorphism H⊗SF(S)→L⊗SF(S) is injective and is identified with the homomorphism
ρ∗(H)⊗RF→ρ∗(L)⊗RF.
Then it follows from (2) that Tor1R(ρ∗(E),F)=0.
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
