Commutative Algebra, chapter III, § 2. General results on filtered rings and modules

An increasing (resp. decreasing) sequence (Gn)n∈Z(G_n)_{n \in \mathbf{Z}} of subgroups of a group GG is called an increasing (resp. decreasing) filtration on GG. A group with a filtration is called a filtered group.

If (Gn)n∈Z(G_n)_{n \in \mathbf{Z}} is an increasing (resp. decreasing) filtration on a group GG and we write Gn′=G−nG'_n = G_{-n}, clearly (Gn′)n∈Z(G'_n)_{n \in \mathbf{Z}} is a decreasing (resp. increasing) filtration on GG. We may therefore restrict our study to decreasing filtrations and hence forth when we speak of a filtration, we shall mean a decreasing filtration, unless otherwise stated.

Given a decreasing filtration (Gn)n∈Z(G_n)_{n \in \mathbf{Z}} on a group GG, clearly ⋂n∈ZGn\bigcap_{n \in \mathbf{Z}} G_n and ⋃n∈ZGn\bigcup_{n \in \mathbf{Z}} G_n are subgroups of GG; the filtration is called separated if ⋃n∈ZGn\bigcup_{n \in \mathbf{Z}} G_n is reduced to the identity element and exhaustive if ⋃n∈ZGn=G\bigcup_{n \in \mathbf{Z}} G_n = G.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
