Commutative Algebra, chapter III, § 2. General results on filtered rings and modules

Given a ring AA, a filtration (An)n∈Z(A_n)_{n \in \mathbf{Z}} over the additive group AA is called compatible with the ring structure on AA if

(1)

AmAn⊂Am+nform∈Z,n∈Z A_m A_n \subset A_{m+n} \quad \text{for} \quad m \in \mathbf{Z}, \quad n \in \mathbf{Z}

(2)

1∈A0. 1 \in A_0.
The ring AA with this filtration is then called a filtered ring.

Conditions (1) and (2) show that AnA_n is a subring of AA and the AnA_n (left and right) A0A_0-modules. The set B=⋃n∈ZAnB = \bigcup_{n \in \mathbf{Z}} A_n is a subring of AA and the set n=⋂n∈ZAnn = \bigcap_{n \in \mathbf{Z}} A_n, a two-sided ideal of BB; for if x∈nx \in n and a∈Aka \in A_k for all k∈Zk \in \mathbf{Z}, x∈Ak−px \in A_{k-p}, whence ax∈Aax \in A, and xa∈Axa \in A, by (1); therefore ax∈nax \in n and xa∈nxa \in n.

An important particular case is that in which An=AA_n = A; then An=AA_n = A for n≤0n \leq 0 and all the AnA_n are two-sided ideals of AA.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
