Commutative Algebra, chapter III, § 2. General results on filtered rings and modules

With the notation and hypotheses of Proposition 14 suppose further that M0M_0 is a finitely generated AA-module and that the ideal n1n_1 of AA, is finitely generated. Let m1m_1 be the kernel of h1h_1; the topologies on AA and MM are then the m1m_1-adic topologies on this ring and this module respectively; to be precise, for all i≥0i \geq 0, the kernels of hih_i and uiu_i are m1i+1m_1^{i+1} and m1i+1Mm_1^{i+1} M respectively; further m1/m12m_1 / m_1^2 is a finitely generated AA-module.

We preserve the notation of the proof of Proposition 14; the hypotheses here allow us to assume that the ideal aa is finitely generated. Let i≥0i \geq 0 be any integer; for all j≥0j \geq 0, by (17), Ni+j=aj(aiM)+Ni+j+1⊂mj(aiM)+Ni+j+1N_{i+j} = a^j(a^i M) + N_{i+j+1} \subset m_j(a^i M) + N_{i+j+1}; conversely, mj(aiM)⊂mjmiM⊂mi+jM⊂Ni+jm_j(a^i M) \subset m_j m_i M \subset m_{i+j} M \subset N_{i+j}, whence

Ni+j=mj(aiM)+Ni+j+1. N_{i+j} = m_j(a^i M) + N_{i+j+1}.

As aa and MM are finitely generated AA-modules, so is aiMa^i M. Applying Corollary 3 to Proposition 12 of no. 9 to the module NiN_i with the filtration (Nij)j∈Z(N_{ij})_{j \in \mathbf{Z}} defined by Nij=NiN_{ij} = N_i, if j<0j < 0, Nij=Ni+jN_{ij} = N_{i+j} if j≥0j \geq 0, we obtain Ni=aiMN_i = a^i M, whence Ni⊂m1iMN_i \subset m_1^i M. But also m1iM⊂miM⊂Nim_1^i M \subset m_i M \subset N_i, whence Ni=m1iMN_i = m_1^i M. Applying this to the case where M=AM = A, uij=hiju_{ij} = h_{ij}, we obtain mi=m1im_i = m_1^i. Moreover, m1=a+m12m_1 = a + m_1^2 by (17), which proves the last assertion of the corollary.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
