Commutative Algebra, chapter III, § 2. General results on filtered rings and modules
Let be a principal ideal domain and a representative system of extremal elements of (Algebra, Chapter VII, § 1, no. 3). The topology on with respect to which the ideals of form a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of 0, which is compatible with the ring structure on , is Hausdorff and the completion of with this topology is canonically isomorphic to the product of the completions of with respect to the -adic topologies, where runs through .
The principal ideals where are maximal and distinct and hence relatively prime, we have already seen (no. 12, Example 3) that the -adic topologies are Hausdorff and hence so is the topology defined in the statement of Proposition 17, which is finer than each of the -adic topologies.
If the Corollary to Proposition 17 is applied when , we denote by the completion of with respect to the topology for which all the ideals of form a fundamental system of neighbourhoods of 0, the ring isomorphic to the product of the rings of -adic integers (P being the set of prime numbers).
Remarks
(1) Clearly, under the conditions of Proposition 17, the topology is the least upper bound of the -adic topologies on .
(2) Every closed ideal of is identical with the product of its projections , which are closed ideals in the ; for is canonically identified with a closed ideal of and with (Algebra, Chapter I, §8, no. 10, Proposition 6), the sum of the is dense in the product (General Topology, Chapter III, §2, no. 9, Proposition 25) and the latter is closed in , whence our assertion.
Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
