Commutative Algebra, chapter V, § 1. Notion of an integral element

Let AA be a ring, RR an algebra over AA (not necessarily commutative) and xx an element of RR. For xx to be integral over AA, it is necessary and sufficient that A[x]A[x] be contained in a subalgebra R′R' of RR which is a finitely generated AA-module.

The condition is obviously necessary by virtue of property (E_{II}); it is also sufficient by virtue of (E_{III}), for R′R' is a faithful A[x]A[x]-module (since it contains the unit element of RR).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
