Commutative Algebra, chapter V, § 1. Notion of an integral element

Let AA be a Noetherian ring, RR an AA-algebra (not necessarily commutative) and xx an element of RR. For xx to be integral over AA, it is necessary and sufficient that there exist a finitely generated submodule of RR containing A[x]A[x].

The condition is necessary by virtue of (E_{II}); it is sufficient for if A[x]A[x] is a sub-A-module of a finitely generated A-module, it is itself a finitely generated A-module (Algebra, Chapter VIII, § 2, no. 3, Proposition 7).

The hypothesis that AA is Noetherian cannot be omitted from the statement (Exercise 2).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
