Commutative Algebra, chapter V, § 1. Notion of an integral element

Let EE be an extension of degree nn of the field QQ of rational numbers. The additive group of the integral closure in EE of the ring ZZ of rational integers is a free commutative group of rank nn.

ZZ is integrally closed (no. 3, Proposition 10) and EE is separable since QQ is of characteristic 0. Corollary 2 can therefore be applied to the case where A=ZA = Z, K=QK = Q and K′=EK' = E.

Remark (2). The conclusions of Corollary 1 are not necessarily true if K′K' is not assumed to be separate over KK, even if K′K' is an extension field of KK (Exercise 20). On the other hand, if AA is a finitely generated integral K0K_0-algebra, where K0K_0 is a field, the integral closure of AA in any extension of finite degree of the field of fractions of AA is a finitely generated AA-module and a Noetherian ring, as we shall see in § 3, no. 2, Theorem 2.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
