Commutative Algebra, chapter VI, § 8. Extensions of a valuation to an algebraic extension

Let KK be a field, LL an algebraic extension of KK, v′v' a valuation on LL, vv its restriction to KK and AA and A′A' the rings of vv and v′v'. Then Γv′/Γv\Gamma_{v'}/\Gamma_v is a torsion group and κ(A′)\kappa(A') is an algebraic extension of κ(A)\kappa(A).

Let (Lα)(L_\alpha) be the family of finite sub-extensions of LL; let us write Γα=v′(Lα∗)\Gamma_\alpha = v'(L_\alpha^*). The group Γv′\Gamma_{v'} is the union of the right directed family consisting of the Γα\Gamma_\alpha; as the groups Γα/Γv\Gamma_\alpha/\Gamma_v are finite (Lemma 2), Γv′/Γv\Gamma_{v'}/\Gamma_v is a torsion group. The argument is similar to prove that κ(A′)\kappa(A') is an algebraic extension of κ(A)\kappa(A).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
