Commutative Algebra, chapter VI, § 8. Extensions of a valuation to an algebraic extension

Let KK be a field, L a finite extension of KK, ww a valuation on LL, vv its restriction to KK and Γw\Gamma_w and Γv\Gamma_v their order groups. The initial index of Γv\Gamma_v in Γw\Gamma_w is called the initial ramification index of ww with respect to vv (or with respect to KK*) and denoted by* ε(w/v)\varepsilon(w/v).

From the above corollary, ε(w/v)\varepsilon(w/v) divides e(w/v)e(w/v) with equality in the case of a discrete valuation.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
