Commutative Algebra, chapter VI, § 8. Extensions of a valuation to an algebraic extension

Under the hypotheses of Definition 5, let AA and mm (resp. A′A' and m′m') be the ring and ideal of the valuation vv (resp. ww*). Then

[A′/mA′:A/m]=ε(w/v)f(w/v). [A'/mA': A/m] = \varepsilon(w/v) f(w/v).

The ideals of A′A' containing mA′mA' and distinct from A′A' correspond to the major subsets of Γw\Gamma_w consisting of elements >0 and containing the elements >0 of Γv\Gamma_v (§ 3, no. 5, Corollary to Proposition 7). They are therefore equal in number to ε(w/v)\varepsilon(w/v) and, as they form a totally ordered set under inclusion, this number is equal to the length of the quotient ring A′/mA′A'/mA'. Now a module of length 1 over A′A' is a 1-dimensional vector space over A′/m′A'/m' and hence a module of length f(w/v)f(w/v) over AA; hence, as A′/mA′A'/mA' is of length ε(w/v)\varepsilon(w/v) over A′A', it is of length ε(w/v)f(w/v)\varepsilon(w/v) f(w/v) over AA, that is over A/mA/m.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
