Commutative Algebra, chapter VI, § 8. Extensions of a valuation to an algebraic extension

Let KK be a field, ff an absolute value on KK such that KK is complete and not discrete with respect to ff and LL an algebraic extension of KK. Then ff can be extended uniquely to an absolute value f′f' on LL and, if LL is of finite degree nn, then

f′(x)=(f(NL/K(x)))1/n f'(x) = (f(N_{L/K}(x)))^{1/n}

for all x∈Lx \in L.

The existence of f′f' follows from Proposition 9 and its uniqueness (over every finite sub-extension of LL and therefore over the whole of LL) from Lemma 2 of §6§ 6, no. 4. Let f′f' be the unique extension off to the algebraic closure of KK and suppose LL is of finite degree nn. We know that NL/K(x)=∏i=1nxiN_{L/K}(x) = \prod_{i=1}^n x_i, where each xix_i is a conjugate of xx over KK (Algebra, Chapter VIII, §12§ 12, no. 2, Proposition 4). In view of the uniqueness of f′f', f′(xi)=f′(x)f'(x_i) = f'(x) for all ii, whence the stated formula.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
