Commutative Algebra, chapter VII, § 2. Dedekind domains

Let AA be a ring, TT an AA-module and (Ti)(T_i) a right directed family of submodules of TT with union TT. Then long⁡A(T)=sup⁡i(long⁡A(Ti))\operatorname{long}_A(T) = \sup_i (\operatorname{long}_A(T_i)).

long⁡A(Ti)≤long⁡A(T)\operatorname{long}_A(T_i) \leq \operatorname{long}_A(T) for all ii. The lemma is obvious if no integer exceeds the long⁡A(Ti)\operatorname{long}_A(T_i), both sides then being infinite. Otherwise, let i0i_0 be an index for which long⁡A(Ti0)\operatorname{long}_A(T_{i_0}) takes its greatest value; then Ti0=TT_{i_0} = T since the family (Ti)(T_i) is directed; whence our assertion in this case.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
