Algebra, chapter I, § 5. Groups operating on a set

Let E be a finite set, ζ∈SE\zeta \in \mathfrak{S}_E a permutation of E and ζˉ\bar{\zeta} the subgroup of SE\mathfrak{S}_E generated by ζ\zeta. ζ\zeta is called a cycle if, under the operation of ζˉ\bar{\zeta} on E, there exists one and only one orbit which is not reduced to a single element. This orbit is called the support of ζ\zeta.

Let ζ\zeta be a cycle. The support supp⁡(ζ)\operatorname{supp}(\zeta) of ζ\zeta is the set of x∈Ex \in E such that ζ(x)≠x\zeta(x) \neq x.

The order of a cycle ζ\zeta is equal to the cardinal of its support. The subgroup ζˉ\bar{\zeta} generated by ζ\zeta operates transitively and faithfully on supp⁡(ζ)\operatorname{supp}(\zeta). As ζ\zeta is commutative, supp⁡(ζ)\operatorname{supp}(\zeta) is a principal set under ζˉ\bar{\zeta} (no. 6, Example 2) and hence Card⁡(supp⁡(ζ))=Card⁡(ζˉ)\operatorname{Card}(\operatorname{supp}(\zeta)) = \operatorname{Card}(\bar{\zeta}).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
