Algebra, chapter II, § 1. Modules

(a) For

0⟶E→fF 0 \longrightarrow E \xrightarrow{f} F
to be an exact sequence, it is necessary and sufficient that ff be injective.

(b) For

E→fF⟶0 E \xrightarrow{f} F \longrightarrow 0
to be an exact sequence, it is necessary and sufficient that ff be surjective.

(c) For

0⟶E→fF⟶0 0 \longrightarrow E \xrightarrow{f} F \longrightarrow 0
to be an exact sequence, it is necessary and sufficient that ff be bijective (in other words (no. 2, Proposition 2) that ff be an isomorphism of E onto F).

(d) If F is a submodule of E and i:F→Ei : F \to E is the canonical injection, p:E→E/Fp : E \to E/F the canonical homomorphism, the diagram (14)

0⟶F→iE→pE/F⟶0 0 \longrightarrow F \xrightarrow{i} E \xrightarrow{p} E/F \longrightarrow 0
is an exact sequence.

(e) If f:E→Ff : E \to F is a homomorphism, the diagram

0⟶f−1(0)⟶iE⟶fF⟶pF/f(E)→0 0 \longrightarrow f^{-1}(0) \overset{i}{\longrightarrow} E \overset{f}{\longrightarrow} F \overset{p}{\longrightarrow} F/f(E) \to 0

(where ii is the canonical injection and pp the canonical surjection) is an exact sequence.

The proposition follows immediately from the definitions and Proposition 2 of no. 2.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
