Algebra, chapter II, § 1. Modules

The submodule generated by the union of a family (Mi)i∈I(M_i)_{i \in I} of submodules of a module EE is identical with the set of sums ∑i∈Ixi\sum_{i \in I} x_i, where (xi)i∈I(x_i)_{i \in I} runs through the set of families of elements of EE of finite support such that xi∈Mix_i \in M_i for all i∈Ii \in I.

Clearly every linear combination of elements of ⋃i∈IMi\bigcup_{i \in I} M_i is of the above form; the converse is obvious.

The submodule of E generated by the union of a family (Mi)i∈I(M_i)_{i \in I} of submodules of E is called the sum of the family (Mi)(M_i) and is denoted by ∑i∈IMi\sum_{i \in I} M_i.

If for all i∈Ii \in I, hih_i is the canonical injection Mi→EM_i \to E and h:(xi)↦∑ihi(xi)h : (x_i) \mapsto \sum_i h_i(x_i) the linear mapping of ⨁i∈IMi\bigoplus_{i \in I} M_i into E corresponding to the family (hi)(h_i) (no. 6, Proposition 6), ∑i∈IMi\sum_{i \in I} M_i is the image of hh; in other words, there is an exact sequence

⨁i∈IMi→hE⟶E/(∑i∈IMi)⟶0. \bigoplus_{i \in I} M_i \xrightarrow{h} E \longrightarrow E / \left( \sum_{i \in I} M_i \right) \longrightarrow 0.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
