Algebra, chapter II, § 1. Modules

Let E be an A-module.

(i) If E is the direct sum of a family (Mλ)λ∈L(M_\lambda)_{\lambda \in L} of submodules and, for all x∈Ex \in E, eλ(x)e_\lambda(x) is the component of x in MλM_\lambda, (eλ)(e_\lambda) is an orthogonal family of projectors such that x=∑λ∈Leλ(x)x = \sum_{\lambda \in L} e_\lambda(x) for all x∈Ex \in E.

(ii) Conversely, if (eλ)λ∈L(e_\lambda)_{\lambda \in L} is an orthogonal family of projectors in End⁡(E)\operatorname{End}(E) such that x=∑λ∈Leλ(x)x = \sum_{\lambda \in L} e_\lambda(x) for all x∈Ex \in E, E is the direct sum of the family of submodules Mλ=eλ(E)M_\lambda = e_\lambda(E).

Property (i) follows from the definitions and (ii) is a special case of no. 6, Corollary 2 to Proposition 6, applied to the canonical injections Mλ→EM_\lambda \to E and the mappings eλ:E→Mλe_\lambda : E \to M_\lambda.

Note that when L is finite the condition x=∑λ∈Leλ(x)x = \sum_{\lambda \in L} e_\lambda(x) for all x∈Ex \in E may also be written in End⁡(E)\operatorname{End}(E).

(31)

1E=∑λ∈Leλ. 1_E = \sum_{\lambda \in L} e_\lambda.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
