Algebra, chapter II, § 2. Modules of linear mappings. Duality

If the exact sequence of linear mappings

(3)

0⟶E′→uE→vE′′⟶0 0 \longrightarrow E' \xrightarrow{u} E \xrightarrow{v} E'' \longrightarrow 0

splits (in other words, if u(E′)u(E') is a direct factor of E) the sequence

(4)

0⟶Hom⁡(E′′,F)→vˉHom⁡(E,F)→uˉHom⁡(E′,F)⟶0 0 \longrightarrow \operatorname{Hom}(E'', F) \xrightarrow{\bar{v}} \operatorname{Hom}(E, F) \xrightarrow{\bar{u}} \operatorname{Hom}(E', F) \longrightarrow 0

is exact and splits. Conversely, if, for every A-module F, sequence (4) is exact, sequence (3) splits.

If the exact sequence (3) splits, there exists a linear retraction u′:E→E′u' : E \to E' associated with uu (§ 1, no. 9, Proposition 15); if

uˉ′=Hom⁡(u′,1F):Hom⁡(E′,F)→Hom⁡(E,F), \bar{u}' = \operatorname{Hom}(u', 1_F) : \operatorname{Hom}(E', F) \to \operatorname{Hom}(E, F),

the fact that u′∘uu' \circ u is the identity implies that uˉ∘uˉ′\bar{u} \circ \bar{u}' is the identity (§1§ 1, no. 2, formula (10)) and hence the first assertion follows from §1§ 1, no. 9, Proposition 15. Conversely, suppose sequence (4) is exact for F=E′F = E'. Then there exists an element f∈Hom(E,E′)f \in \mathrm{Hom}(E, E') such that f∘u=1E′f \circ u = 1_{E'}, and the conclusion follows from §1§ 1, no. 9, Proposition 15.

Note that the first assertion of Proposition 1 can also be considered as a special case of §1§ 1, no. 6, Corollary 1 to Proposition 6, canonically identifying Hom(E′,F)⊕Hom(E′′,F)\mathrm{Hom}(E', F) \oplus \mathrm{Hom}(E'', F) with Hom(E′⊕E′′,F)\mathrm{Hom}(E' \oplus E'', F) by means of the Z\mathbf{Z}-linear mapping Hom(p′,1F)+Hom(p′′,1F)\mathrm{Hom}(p', 1_F) + \mathrm{Hom}(p'', 1_F), where p′:E′⊕E′′→E′p': E' \oplus E'' \to E' and p′′:E′⊕E′′→E′′p'': E' \oplus E'' \to E'' are the canonical projections.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
