Algebra, chapter II, § 10. Matrices

The above formulae extend to a more general situation. To be precise:

(a) Suppose H=⋃(ι,κ)∈I×KGικH = \bigcup_{(\iota, \kappa) \in I \times K} G_{\iota \kappa} where each GικG_{\iota \kappa} is a commutative group written additively; then the sum M+M′M + M' may be defined when, for each ordered pair (ι,κ)(\iota, \kappa), mικ∈Gικm_{\iota \kappa} \in G_{\iota \kappa} and mικ′∈Gικm'_{\iota \kappa} \in G_{\iota \kappa}.

(b) Let I, K, L be three sets with K assumed finite and let H′=⋃(i,k)∈I×KHik′H' = \bigcup_{(i, k) \in I \times K} H'_{ik}, H′′=⋃(k,l)∈K×LHkl′′H'' = \bigcup_{(k, l) \in K \times L} H''_{kl}, H=⋃(i,l)∈I×LHilH = \bigcup_{(i, l) \in I \times L} H_{il} be three sets; suppose that each HilH_{il} is a commutative group written additively and for each triple (i,k,l)(i, k, l) let

fikl:Hik′×Hkl′′→Hil f_{ikl}: H'_{ik} \times H''_{kl} \to H_{il}
be a mapping. Then if M′=(mik′)(i,k)∈I×KM' = (m'_{ik})_{(i, k) \in I \times K}, M′′=(mkl′′)(k,l)∈K×LM'' = (m''_{kl})_{(k, l) \in K \times L} are matrices such that mik′∈Hik′m'_{ik} \in H'_{ik} and mkl′′∈Hkl′′m''_{kl} \in H''_{kl} for all i,k,li, k, l we can define the product M′M′′M'M'' via the fiklf_{ikl}. We leave to the reader the task of writing down and proving the formulae analogous to (4), (5) and (6).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
