Algebra, chapter II, § 10. Matrices

If gg is a linear form on the CC-module Mn(C)\mathbf{M}_n(C) such that g(XY)=g(YX)g(XY) = g(YX) for all matrices X,YX, Y in Mn(C)\mathbf{M}_n(C), there exists one and only one scalar c∈Cc \in C such that g(X)=c⋅Tr⁡(X)g(X) = c \cdot \operatorname{Tr}(X) for every matrix X∈Mn(C)X \in \mathbf{M}_n(C).

Since the proposition is trivial for n=1n = 1, attention may be confined to the case where n⩾2n \geqslant 2. Taking X=Eij, Y=EjkX = E_{ij},\ Y = E_{jk} with i≠ki \neq k, we obtain g(Eik)=0g(E_{ik}) = 0; then taking X=Eij, Y=EjiX = E_{ij},\ Y = E_{ji} with i≠ji \neq j, we find g(Eii)=g(Ejj)g(E_{ii}) = g(E_{jj}); the proposition follows immediately since the EijE_{ij} form a basis of Mn(C)\mathbf{M}_n(\mathbf{C}).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
