Algebra, chapter II, § 10. Matrices

Given a matrix XX with mm rows and nn columns over a field KK, the dimension of the subspace of KdmK_d^m generated by the nn columns of XX is called the rank of XX with respect to KK and denoted by rg⁡(X)\operatorname{rg}(X).

It can also be said that the rank of XX is the maximum number of linearly independent columns of XX (as elements of KdmK_d^m). Obviously rg⁡(X)⩽inf⁡(m,n)\operatorname{rg}(X) \leqslant \inf(m, n); for every submatrix YY of XX, rg⁡(Y)⩽rg⁡(X)\operatorname{rg}(Y) \leqslant \operatorname{rg}(X).

If EE and FF are two finite-dimensional vector spaces over KK and uu a linear mapping of EE into FF, the rank of the matrix M(u)M(u) with respect to any two bases is equal to the rank of uu.

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
