Algebra, chapter III, § 8. Determinants

Let XX be a matrix of type (m,n)(m, n) over a commutative field. The rank of XX is equal to the greatest integer pp such that there exists at least one minor of XX of order pp which is ≠0\neq 0.

The rank of XX is the maximum number of linearly independent columns of XX (II, § 10, no. 12, Definition 7). The corollary then follows from Proposition 15 and formula (17) of no. 5.

Consider now the case of a system of mm linear equations in nn unknowns over a commutative field K\mathbf{K}:

∑j=1nλijξj=ηi(1≤i≤m). \sum_{j=1}^n \lambda_{ij} \xi_j = \eta_i \quad (1 \leq i \leq m).

Bourbaki puts the proof directly after the statement, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
